Backends · Specification to running service

Describe the backend. Review the behavior. Ship it to Dev, then Production.

Backends turns an independently versioned HTTP API, MCP tool set, or scheduled job specification into a private Rust or JavaScript implementation hosted on Cloudflare. You talk to Build in plain language; the platform writes, tests, and verifies the code before anything is deployed.

Backends, in context.

Flow diagram

Each flow has a trigger, an outcome and steps, drawn as a diagram.

A focused loop around the same project context.

A concrete use case

A founder needs a small authenticated API with a nightly job and a database behind it, verified by real tests, without hiring for the first version or operating servers.

  1. 01

Create a backend with the wizard: pick HTTP API, MCP tools, or Scheduled in any combination, choose Rust or JavaScript once, and name it.

  2. 02

Build in a conversation that updates the backend's own Flows, Given/When/Then test cases, data models, OpenAPI or MCP tool contracts, and ordered SQL migrations, each with representative before/after tests.

  3. 03

Deploy the verified build to Dev, inspect its evidence and packages, then promote the exact same build to Production, roll back a release, or suspend serving.

Using Backends

Build returns behavior paragraphs and test evidence rather than source transcripts, and an older passing build never certifies newly edited cases. Schema changes stay additive, verified migrations are immutable, and compilation and hosting depend on operator-configured services, so readiness is reported honestly rather than assumed.
